Ha Long Bay – The Descending Dragon

A Timeless Landscape

In the northeast of Vietnam, where the Gulf of Tonkin meets the sky, lies Ha Long Bay, a place where time seems to stand still.

Known as "Descending Dragon", this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site is part of an ancient archipelago spanning 1,553 km², home to 1,969 islets carved from limestone over millions of years.

Here, nature tells its own stories through:

  • Towering karst formations standing guard over emerald waters

  • Caves, sinkholes, and underground streams shaping a hidden world

  • Echoes of prehistoric cultures dating back to 18,000 BC

Ha Long Bay is more than a destination, it’s a journey through deep time.

Awaiting the ferry at the very very busy cruise port to Ha Long Bay.

Exploring by Water

Aboard a cruise boat, the bay unfolds like a dream. The water shifts from jade to sapphire, reflections dancing as the towering formations loom above.

Though this remarkable place faces modern environmental challenges, its beauty remains undeniable and humbling. Floating villages, hidden caves, and endless horizons make Ha Long Bay a place that must be felt, not just seen.

Floating shops cruise by offering anything from pearls to food and utilities. These scenes through the eye of my camera were breath taking.
